As part of its annual survey of physicians, the American Medical Association?s Socioeconomic Monitoring System (SMS) collects information on total annual tax-deductible professional expenses per self-employed physician and the number of self-employed physicians in each practice. These data can be used to form some simple measures of the efficiency of practices by size of practice.
