The provision of medical care is assuming some of the characteristics of retail services delivery. This article outlines some of the factors that impact consumer (patient) decision-making in selecting providers. It focuses on measures that practices and institutions may adopt to improve patient satisfaction and to establish and maintain the referral chain. These actions range from promoting word-of-mouth referrals to enhancing relationships with primary care providers.
