To report consultations with confidence, physicians must document explicitly the three components that distinguish a consult (99241–99255) from a “standard” outpatient (99201–99215) or inpatient (99221–99223) E/M service. Just as importantly, the reporting physician must establish that the service represents a true “request for opinion” rather than a “transfer of care.”
